Hilo is located on the east side of the Big Island of Hawaii. It's the largest city on the Big Island and is a popular starting point to explore the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Because public transportation on the Big Island is lacking, almost all visitors rent a car from one of the car rental agencies available upon arrival at Hilo International Airport (ITO). Taxis are an alternative and are available at the airport, although renting a car is seen by many to be more practical. Visitors should note that the Island's free public bus system does not come to Hilo International Airport. It's always best to make car reservations in advance, because Hilo's close proximity to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park can cause a lack of available vehicles.

Hilo has become famous for its home-made ice cream. It has been called the best ice-cream on earth as is available at several stores in the downtown area.
